The UK 'Patent Box'

There is little need to emphasise the continuing importance of intellectual property in the current business environment engendered by the dominance of branding the influence of ecommerce and an abundance of innovation. The phenomenon crosses borders with ease and governments are keen to attract innovators to their jurisdictions with a mix of incentives including tax breaks and R&D credits.
 
So it was no surprise that the recent PBR announced the introduction of a 'Patent Box' regime to provide as a low rate of UK corporation tax on income from patents. The favourable tax rate is to apply to patents granted after mid-2011 but only with effect from 2013. There have been mixed reactions so far.
