VAT performance: how businesses compare

Gary Harley and Chris Downing report on findings from a recent survey which suggest that VAT/GST remains under-resourced in most businesses.

The effective tax rate and cash tax rate are metrics commonly used by business to measure corporate tax performance. Established benchmarks for the measurement of VAT/GST performance are limited. Indeed even the concept of having performance benchmarks for indirect tax is alien to many. In an attempt to redress the balance and to ascertain what the most appropriate benchmarks might be KPMG has worked extensively on investigating performance benchmarking in indirect tax to see how businesses are measuring up.
