VAT registration: common errors

The CIOT has published a list of common errors in online VAT registration applications which lead to delays. The list, produced by the Joint VAT Consultative Committee, highlights the following errors to be avoided:

  • address not matching the business’s principal place of business;
  • trade classification not matching up with the work that the business itself carries out;
  • VAT liability of trading not correctly identified;
  • invalid signatory for the application (e.g. for a corporate body it must be a director, company secretary or authorised signatory or an authorised agent);
  • invalid dates on the application; and
  • bank account details provided are not in the name of the taxable person.
