HMRC's High Net Worth Unit

Stephen Besford examines whether HMRC's HNW unit has remained focused on its original purpose

It is well over a year since HMRC reorganised the Charities Assets and Residence Unit (CAR) and what were the Complex Personal Tax Teams (CPTT) and Expatriate Tax Teams. The reorganisation saw CPTT being disbanded and the creation of the High Net Worth Unit (HNW). How the HNW unit fared to date and what are its prospects are for the future?

Complex Personal Tax Teams

CPTT dated back to the old Inland Revenue days and the original team's brief was to deal with the self-assessment of individiuals with complex tax affairs but in practice most of the cases were selected on the basis of high income rather than complexity. Immediately prior to being disbanded CPTT had responsibility for approximately 45 000 high income cases as well as some further 60 000 inward expatriate taxpayers.
