Approval of new rules for EU ETS after 2020

The Council of the EU has formally approved revised EU ETS targets for the period from 2021 to 2030. This will involve an annual reduction of 2.2% in the cap on overall emissions from 2021 onwards (compared to the current rate of 1.74%).

The Council of the EU has formally approved revised EU ETS targets for the period from 2021 to 2030. This will involve an annual reduction of 2.2% in the cap on overall emissions from 2021 onwards (compared to the current rate of 1.74%). The overall EU target is to reduce emissions by at least 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. The target for 2030 in sectors covered by the EU ETS is a reduction of 43% as compared to 2005. The amended directive will enter into force on the 20th day following its publication in the EU official journal.
