HMRC has developed a new VAT registration service to speed up the registration process. A key change is that every new taxpayer registering for VAT from 1 August 2022 will automatically be signed up to MTD as part of their general VAT registration application, and the requirement to complete a separate MTD registration will cease.
MTD for VAT became mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses from 1 April this year, so existing taxpayers should be unaffected by this change. However, for any new taxpayers, the change should streamline the VAT registration process.
HMRC recommends that any VAT registration applications currently in progress are submitted by 5pm on 31 July 2022 as any partially completed saved applications on the old service will be lost after this time.
