The coronavirus job retention scheme (CJRS) closes to new
entrants on 30 June 2020. From that date, employers will only be able to
furlough employees they have previously furloughed for a full three-week
period. This means that the final date by which an employer could furlough an
employee for the first time was 10 June.
On 9 June, however, the Treasury announced
that parents on statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental or
parental bereavement leave, and who return to work ‘after a long period of
absence’, will be permitted to be furloughed, even after the 10 June cut-off
date. This will only apply where the employer has previously furloughed
employees.
