Exchequer Secretary committed to MTD timetable following ‘robust’ conversations with HMRC

The Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury James Murray MP said he decided to commit to the timeframe for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment following ‘robust’ conversations with HMRC in the summer. He also said he took on the role as chair of the HMRC Board – becoming the first minister to hold that position – because ‘working on the delivery side is something that I want to be fully integrated in.’

MTD for ITSA is due to be introduced in phases: from April 2026 for self-employed businesses and landlords with income over £50 000; and extended in April 2027 to those with income over £30 000. In the recent Budget it was announced that MTD for ITSA will be extended further to sole traders and landlords with income over £20 000 by the end of this parliament.
