HMRC asks for patience as staff stage walkout

Contact centre telephone lines ‘will be open today as normal’

HMRC staff are staging a half-day walkout this morning as part of a three-month campaign of industrial action by civil servants over jobs, pensions and conditions.

Contact centre telephone lines will be open today as normal, HMRC said, but ‘it will inevitably take longer than usual to talk to us’. Callers will find it much easier to get through if they can delay calling until later today or tomorrow, HMRC added. ‘We very much regret any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.’

The action by members of the Public and Commercial Services union follows walkouts at other government departments on Friday.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said on 2 April, announcing a ‘long weekend’ of walkouts: ‘Civil and public servants are working harder than ever to provide the services we all rely on but, instead of rewarding them, the government is imposing cuts to their pay, raiding their pensions and trying to rip up their basic working conditions.'
