HMRC revise process for claiming employment expenses

From 14 October 2024 HMRC will require claims for PAYE employment expenses to be made using Form P87 and for supporting evidence to be provided to prove eligibility. This is in response to risk identified earlier in 2024 around whether claimants were eligible for the relief they were claiming. HMRC’s new policy paper sets out examples of the types of evidence that it would expect to be provided. This is the process for where employees need to claim tax relief on their allowable expenses where those expenses have not been reimbursed by their employer.

From 14 October taxpayers will not be able to submit a PAYE employment expenses claim using the digital form or make a new claim over the phone (although the online eligibility checking service will remain).
