As part of the drive to crack down on tax evasion, HMRC is to create 30 new taskforces in 2012/13. The taskforces will target specific business sectors in specific locations where there is evidence of tax evasion. HMRC says that those targets are likely to include the rag trade (imports and sales of clothing), the motor trade and indoor and outdoor markets.
HMRC has also published a summary of taskforces that were launched in 2011, along with details of a new taskforce to address tax evasion by landlords in Scotland. Those taskforces, which targeted landlords, restaurants and scrap metal dealers, amongst others, are currently expected to raise in the region of £60m according to HMRC.
