How did you end up in tax?
By accident. After completing my PhD I had no idea what to do. The careers adviser pointed me towards the civil service and there were vacancies for tax inspectors so that’s what I became.
Who in tax do you most admire?
John Whiting for his unparalleled ability to explain complex tax issues straightforwardly. Among past colleagues I would mention Robert King who taught me a lot when I was starting in the profession and Clive Tulloch who demonstrated that integrity is at the heart of being an adviser. Also a couple of people who have recently retired: John Andrews for his tireless campaigning zeal and from HMRC Stephen Banyard for his ability to see all sides of a problem.
What work is keeping you busy?
A lot of my time is spent negotiating...
