How did you end up in tax? Was it by accident or by design?
It was a deliberate decision. I like the intellectual challenge of something that keeps changing. At heart I’m a pure mathematician and I enjoy solving problems.
Who in tax do you most admire?
Sir Launcelot Henderson. He can write a 100-page judgement on a complex area of EU law which I can read from start to finish and understand the whole picture by the time I get to the end.
What advice would give to someone entering the profession?
Own up to your mistakes and work out where to go from there. Nobody’s perfect everybody gets something wrong sometimes no matter how hard we try and the worst thing you can do is ignore it.
