How did you end up in tax?

Via a law degree and accountancy where I trained partly in tax.

Who in tax do you most admire?

Nigel Lawson. He tried to simplify the tax system and resisted pressures to over-refine it.

What piece of professional advice would you give to someone entering the profession?

Litigation is always uncertain – tax avoidance appeals even more so. Ensure you enjoy what you do and you will be good at it too.

Is there a recent tax case of major significance that has not received the attention it deserves?

Gray’s Timber – apparently the Revenue can resile from their published statements when it suits them.

If you could influence tax policy what would you recommend?

Confront in a public and honest way the tradeoffs between complexity ...
