Online options for top self-assessment queries

The five most common reasons for calls to HMRC’s self-assessment helpline can all be dealt with quickly online say HMRC. HMRC’s press release provides background but also links directly through to the relevant online guidance to address these top five issues:

  1. Taxpayer no longer needs to complete a self-assessment tax return;
  2. Taxpayer needs to register for self-assessment;
  3. Check if a taxpayer needs to complete a return;
  4. Checking on progress of registration for self-assessment (links to HMRC’s ‘Check when you can expect a reply from HMRC’ service); and
  5. Checking progress of a self-assessment repayment (also links through to the online service)
