The Budget in March announced a change in the government’s approach to taxation with a further one percentage point cut in corporation tax and a shift from giving the UK the most competitive corporate tax system in the G20 by the end of this Parliament to the far wider but less time limited aim of making the UK the most competitive tax system with a specific target for the lowest corporate tax rate in the G7.
This once again puts the UK in direct competition with our neighbours and raises the prospect of tax competition once again becoming a driving force for future tax policy change.
