More than 600 tax enquiries targeting people in the plumbing industry will be under way by the time the Plumbers Tax Safe Plan disclosure opportunity closes at the end of this month, HMRC have warned.
More than 600 tax enquiries targeting people in the plumbing industry will be under way by the time the Plumbers Tax Safe Plan disclosure opportunity closes at the end of this month, HMRC have warned.
Plumbers, gas fitters and heating engineers were invited to tell HMRC by 31 May that they intended to take advantage of the favourable penalty terms offered under the PTSP. Those who did so will need to make their disclosure and pay the tax owed by 31 August.
‘Since June, HMRC has been using information gathered from many different sources to open investigations into hundreds of people who have failed to come forward. In addition to penalties, defaulters can face criminal prosecution,’ the department said.
It added the PTSP disclosure route remained open for those in the plumbing industry with unpaid tax who still wish to come forward, although ‘they may not receive exactly the same terms as under the plumbers plan’.
