It quoted Francesca Lagerberg, Head of Tax at Grant Thornton as saying that the findings almost certainly reflected the complexity of returns filed by those with advisers: ‘If you have a very simple return, you can file it without advice and you will probably get it right.’
The NAO’s findings sparked ‘a furious reaction’ from professional advisers, the Financial Times reported (13 October).
Chas Roy Chowdhury, the ACCA’s Head of Tax, said the report was ‘half baked’, and Paul Aplin of the ICAEW said it had set an ‘extremely unhelpful’ hare running.
