Reeves hints at Labour tax policy

printer Mail

In her speech to the Labour Party conference, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves very briefly touched on the following tax proposals, should the party win the next general election:

  • ‘online tech giants’ would be required to ‘pay their fair share’ (the Conservatives, at Autumn Statement 2022, had previously ruled out an online sales tax and Labour has been less than clear on the idea);
  • a ‘proper windfall tax’ on the ‘huge profits’ of energy companies;
  • abolition of non-dom tax status;
  • VAT on private school tuition fees (to be included in the first Labour budget); and
  • an increase the 2% SDLT surcharge on transactions by non-UK resident buyers.
