Canada’s framework for the maintenance of ownership information is in place but ‘requires improvement’ in relation to nominees and bearer shares, according to the OECD’s Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes.

Canada has a ‘long history of effective exchange’ through co-operative and well-developed relationships with partner jurisdictions, the Forum said as it released seven peer reviews assessing members’ ability ‘to stop international tax evasion’.

Germany exchanges information with a large network of jurisdictions across the globe, though could improve its response times, the OECD said. But the Forum found ‘shortcomings’ regarding the availability of ownership information on persons holding bearer shares.

Other reports released on 14 April examine Aruba, The Bahamas, Belgium, Estonia and Ghana. The Forum has now published reports on 25 members and will complete another 35 in time for the November 2011 G20 Summit, the OECD added.
