Tax reform: why and how it should be done

We should grasp the opportunity to create a stable, coherent, simpler and fair tax system, argues David Martin (formerly Herbert Smith).

Speaking in Leeds at the first hustings for Conservative members at the end of July Liz Truss said: ‘Our tax system isn’t working. It’s too complicated. I would have a complete review of the tax system.’

She didn’t explain her thinking any further but I would respectfully agree with her conclusion. There is an immediate cost of living crisis to tackle but there will remain a longer term need to reappraise our tax law.
