HMRC has reminded taxpayers completing an online tax return for the first time that they need to register for online filing.

HMRC has reminded taxpayers completing an online tax return for the first time that they need to register for online filing.

"It is important that you register now if you need to, because it can take up to seven working days to receive your activation code, and time is running out," HMRC said.

Anyone who is required to complete a 2010/11 return but has not yet done so is required to file the return online by 31 January.

For the first time, taxpayers filing a return after the deadline will incur a £100 penalty regardless of the amount of tax payable.

The CIOT has highlighted two other changes to the penalty regime. "If return is over three months late there is a £10 daily charge for up to 90 days. The subsequent, further fixed penalties have been replaced by a sliding scale starting at £300, depending on the tax owed and the length of the delay before payment is made," the tax body said.
