VAT on international services: B2B & reverse changes

Background

A UK company (UK co) has recently agreed to enter into a contract with a multinational business headquartered in the US to provide advice on a potential restructuring of its European operations and to develop a focused business strategy.

The US multinational has a European HQ in the UK and other wholly-owned subsidiaries in France Germany Ireland and Spain. Under the proposed terms of the contract UK co is required to work with the European HQ and the other European subsidiaries. This work will entail the UK co’s staff travelling to the relevant locations liaising on a regular basis with local staff to review the business understanding local issues and developing a business strategy for that country.
