Why can’t we love HMRC like we love the NHS?

Raising professional standards isn’t just an issue for advisers. Jonathan Riley (PKF Francis Clark) discusses the challenges facing HMRC.

The UK has a new government and in their words one committed to a ten year plan to ‘rebuild the fabric of a broken Britain’. And one of their first actions was to appoint Lord Darzi to undertake a thorough and independent review of the NHS. Why? Because the NHS is seen as a much loved and absolutely vital public service. 

So why didn’t the government look to do the same thing with HMRC – an independent review of a much less loved institution but one that is nonetheless vital to the UK? If as is often suggested the scale of tax abuse in the UK is so considerable shouldn’t a new government have sought to understand how it could be made more effective?
